In 1952, a Bishop visits a penitentiary to hear a dying man´s last confession. Once inside, he is locked in the confessional with the ailing Simon, a childhood friend. The inmates transform the altar into a stage and enact a tale that is familiar to both men. As the action moves between the crude prison setting and the actual events of 1912, the play reveals aspects of the Bishop´s life that have been hidden for forty years when the truth about one man´s betrayal and another´s revenge is exposed.
